Who We Are

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet or kayak down the Yarra, we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home, just as we have for over 130 years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

About The Role

An exciting 6-month part-time opportunity (2 days per week in a job-share arrangement) is available within Melbourne Water's Waterways & Catchment Services team, covering a period of parental leave. Reporting to the Manager, Lower Yarra, this role offers the chance to make a meaningful contribution to the team.

As an Operations & Maintenance Officer, you will play a key customer-facing role, helping maintain community confidence in Melbourne Water as the region's waterway, drainage and catchment manager. You will support the operation and maintenance of waterway and drainage assets while delivering responsive customer service across your designated area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate proactive and reactive maintenance activities to support waterway, flood, drainage and land management outcomes.
  • Manage internal and external customer requests, ensuring timely and effective responses in line with established procedures.
  • Inspect assets, raise work orders and monitor maintenance performance to ensure service levels are met.
  • Support the handover and acceptance of new and renewed drainage and wetland assets.
  • Undertake compliance and enforcement activities as required.
  • Assist with operational incidents, including participation in an after-hours roster when required.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with councils, contractors, government agencies and community stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in maintenance programs and operational processes.

About You

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience in waterway, drainage and civil asset management and maintenance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions and manage operational issues.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
  • A customer-focused approach and proven ability to build positive relationships.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A proactive, resilient and solutions-focused mindset, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively to deliver high-quality outcomes.
