About the Role

Melbourne Water is seeking a motivated GIS and data management  professional to support the way we manage, maintain and improve flood mapping, flood model assets and geospatial information across greater Melbourne. This is a unique opportunity to apply your technical GIS capability in a role that directly supports flood risk management, development planning, mitigation projects and the delivery of reliable flood information to the people who need it.

Working within the Service Programs Flood and Drainage team, you will support the implementation of Melbourne Water’s flood information program, helping ensure flood information and model datasets are accurate, accessible, secure and fit for purpose. You will work closely with internal flood modelling and GIS specialists, to strengthen how flood information is received, checked, stored, governed and made available for business use. You’ll support the Service Programs Flood and Drainage team to:

  • Deliver work elements and/or projects as part of the flood information work program covering flood modelling and flood mapping as directed.
  • Provide advice on Melbourne Water’s current flood information and dataset management approach and guidance on best flood model asset, dataset and mapping practice.
  • Correct, modify, interrogate and output flood maps for internal and external business needs.
  • Provide flood information for planning purposes, mitigation projects, other infrastructure projects, in addition to other “as requested” information requirements of the business.
  • Ensure governance, management, quality with flood information provision occurs.
  • Support the oversight, management, quality and delivery of flood information.
  • Support assessing and reporting on flood information asset performance, service capability and risk to flood information services.
  • Support Maintenance of relevant flood information asset management policies, plans, procedures and standards.

This role will suit someone with a solid technical foundation who is ready to take the next step, build deeper capability and have a meaningful impact on how flood information is managed and used across Melbourne Water.

About you:

You will bring strong GIS capability and a practical understanding of spatial data, analysis and information management with hands-on experience to work with confidence, contribute ideas and help shape better information management and data provision approaches.

  • GIS application, specifically Esri GIS products - ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, covering spatial analysis and geoprocessing tools, spatial data format interoperability.
  • Data automation - scripting (python, SQL) or no-code processing software (ModelBuilder/FME).
  • Data management and analytics.
  • QGIS, Spatial database design, raster format capabilities and limitations desirable.
  • Knowledge of authoritative Victorian Government data sources (Vicmap) desirable.
  • Experience in flood mapping, including management and provision of flood information desirable.
  • Practical experience with flood modelling hydrological and hydraulic software, RORB and TUFLOW, for geospatial processing and management of model output files and data sets advantageous.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills which add value to business and customers.
  • Coordination, prioritisation and time management skills to deliver on agreed, long-term objectives while managing day-to-day challenges and work unsupervised.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with all stakeholders and to prepare and deliver information to an audience in a professional manner.
