Who We Are

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet or kayak down the Yarra, we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home, just as we have for over 130 years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

About The Role

Reporting to the Head of Western Treatment Plant, we have a full-time, permanent opportunity for an experienced water industry leader to join the Western Treatment Plant (WTP) Process Improvement team.

As Manager WTP Process Improvement you will lead a highly capable technical team responsible for the performance, compliance and continuous improvement of WTP’s treatment processes. Your remit will span the monitoring of sewage quality/quantity, asset performance, trade waste, recycled water production/distribution, sewage by-products and emissions all the time ensuring WTP continues to meet its regulatory, environmental, customer and community obligations.

This is a technical leadership and people management role which combines strong process engineering knowledge with the ability to lead a team of specialists, influence key stakeholders and drive improvements across a complex regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight of WTP treatment performance, including sewage inflows, treatment quality and quantity, asset performance and compliance.
  • Lead continuous improvement and risk management initiatives to optimise treatment performance, operational efficiency, service delivery and cost effectiveness.
  • Oversee the effective management of key treatment processes and by-products, including trade waste, recycled water, energy generation, emissions, and biosolids.
  • Provide strategic input into WTP’s current and future process and asset requirements, partnering with operations, maintenance, asset management and planning teams.
  • Support the commissioning, integration and operational readiness of new and upgraded assets, ensuring expected operational benefits are realised.
  • Build strong relationships with regulators, industry partners, customers and internal stakeholders, including leading the trade waste interface and recycled water customer management.
  • Oversee key compliance and assurance activities, including HACCP and management systems, sewerage billing assurance, laboratory operations, incident management and investigations.

About You

You will be an experienced water industry professional and people leader who combines strong technical judgement with the ability to lead specialists, navigate complexity and influence within a highly regulated environment.

Ideally, you will bring experience from the water, wastewater or treatment sector. We also welcome applications from adjacent process-intensive industries where you have gained relevant practical experience managing complex processes within technical, environmental and regulatory constraints.

You will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (or higher) in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Extensive people leadership experience, with a demonstrated ability to develop technical professionals and foster high performance.
  • Strong process engineering experience gained within water, wastewater, treatment or a comparable process intensive industry.
  • Experience operating within a highly regulated technical environment and engaging effectively with regulators.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and build trusted internal and external relationships.
  • Experience with management systems including Quality, Environment, HACCP and Safety.
