The Role

We are now hiring a Civil or Environmental Engineer to join our Statutory Flood Development Assessment Services team.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced and outcome-focused professional, who will enjoy working in a medium sized team of Statutory Referral Authority Urban Planning & Engineering experts. Together this team are tasked with making and leading best practice Flood & Drainage decisions on all types of development application referral requirements for Melbourne Water, primarily where it is the regional Drainage or Floodplain Management Authority (under the Water Act) and as set out in the Planning, Subdivision and Building Act & Regulations. This opportunity has an immediate start and is an ongoing permanent role.

This role delivers technical drainage engineering and flood modelling advice in assessing proposed developments referred to Melbourne Water in its Statutory Referral capacity. This will comprise planning, subdivision and building permit applications, as well as proposals for precinct scale urban renewal masterplans, and other types of strategic development proposals. The flood risk assessments will range across our operating area in both rural and urban locations.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Technical skills in the operation and application of current flood development hydraulic/hydrologic engineering techniques and standards with an ability to use and review modelling software such as RORB, HEC-RAS, and TUFLOW.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of relevant Flood Modelling and Assessment Guidelines and Standards including but not limited to ARR2019 and the 2019 DELWP Guidelines for Development in Flood Prone Areas
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to influence outcomes ensuring that flood risk is addressed at the planning phase.
  • Knowledge of processes and practices associated with best practice requirements for floodplain management, drainage design, stormwater management, whole of water cycle management and achievement of environmental outcomes.
  • Skills in the preparation of, assessment and critical analysis of prescribed development flood engineering tasks including flood information and modelling, hydrologic and hydraulic engineering, drainage and storm water quality treatment modelling and design. Make decisions as required using judgement in the application of a range of factors when making recommendations and decisions on most types of flood development engineering matters.
  • The ability to professionally respond to developers and be confident in exploring flexible solutions. Judgement will be required to provide superior customer service while simultaneously gaining trust and respect for taking and defending positions that protect community outcomes and Melbourne Water’s commercial objectives.

Your ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders is required together with a tertiary qualification in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
