About the Role

As a Diversions Authorised Water Officer based out of our NERO Office (Croydon), you will work across Melbourne Water's extensive catchment network to monitor water diversion activities, support compliance with water legislation, and ensure the sustainable use of one of our most valuable natural resources.

This unique role combines field-based inspections, stakeholder engagement, technical assessment and regulatory responsibilities, offering the opportunity to make a genuine impact on communities, agriculture, industry and the environment.

Working closely with landholders, licensed water users, government agencies and internal specialists, you will investigate water diversion activities, provide advice on compliance requirements, undertake site inspections and contribute to the management of water resources across the region. You will use your strong communication skills and sound judgement to balance regulatory outcomes with practical solutions, helping protect water security while maintaining positive stakeholder relationships.

• Maintain our customers’ and stakeholders’ confidence and trust as the region’s waterway and streamflow diversion manager ensuring water resources are managed in accordance with delegated functions and legislative obligations. Specifically, responsibility for:
• Administer diversion license applications relating to stormwater, water trading, transfers and works from streamflow diversions customers
• Manage metering activities including asset installation, maintenance and recording
• Initiate and undertake compliance and enforcement activities
• Lead investigations involving alleged diversion license breaches of the Water Act 1989, make recommendations and lead follow up action as needed
• Foster internal and external customer and stakeholder interaction and engagement

About you:                     

• You will enjoy working independently in the field, solving complex issues, engaging with diverse stakeholders and contributing to the sustainable management of water resources.
• Experience in compliance, environmental management, natural resource management, water operations or a related field.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
• The ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies and regulatory requirements.
• Well-developed investigation, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Experience working autonomously and managing competing priorities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and customer service.
